1. Installation context
In 2004, ESSO Italiana commissioned MITA Water Technologies to provide wastewater treatment solutions at its coastal depots in Naples and Palermo. These plants manage rainwater, overflow water and tank drainage water, in accordance with Legislative Decree No. 152/1999.
2. Proposed Solution: Naples
The Naples plant is based on a treatment cycle consisting of several stages. Initially, wastewater is accumulated and then passes through a sand filtration process. Next, nutrients are added and triple-stage bioreactor oxidation is carried out. After final sedimentation, the sludge is stored.
MITA Water Technologies provided the equipment for two stages of treatment: a continuous regeneration sand filter model Filtrasand FS 5/1 for pre-treatment and three model B 200-40-1 bioreactors for biological treatment. The use of the Biorulli(r) has enabled ESSO Italiana to achieve numerous advantages, such as reduced footprint, reduced energy consumption, reduced operation and maintenance costs, and the possibility of developing a modular solution that can be expanded over time. The presence of the Filtrasand continuous regeneration sand filter helped increase the effectiveness of the pre-treatment process.
3. Proposed Solution: Palermo
Similar to the Naples plant, the Palermo plant follows a similar treatment cycle. Wastewater is accumulated and subjected to filtration on sand. Next, nutrient dosing and triple-stage bioreactor oxidation are carried out. After final sedimentation, the sludge is stored. MITA Water Technologies supplied the equipment for two stages of treatment: a continuous regeneration sand filter model Filtrasand FS 3/1 for pre-treatment and three model B 200-27-1 biorolls for biological treatment.
Again, the application of the birollers enabled ESSO Italiana to achieve the same advantages of space containment, reduced energy consumption, lower operation and maintenance costs, modularity and ease of operation.
4. Results Achieved
Thanks to the solutions provided by MITA Water Technologies, both the plants in Naples and Palermo have achieved significant results. ESSO Italiana has managed to reduce energy consumption, minimize maintenance interventions, efficiently manage spaces, and comply with current regulations. The modularity of the proposed solutions also allows for future expansion of the plant according to the company’s needs. The continuous regeneration sand filter Filtrasand and the use of bio-rolls have been crucial in ensuring a higher effectiveness of wastewater treatment, contributing to the overall success of the plant.
