Optimal engineered solutions EDI engineers can design and assemble the appropriate combination of membranes, diffusers, and configurations to meet the customer’s specific wastewater treatment requirements.
EDI Fine Bubble Diffusers
Aeration for Biological Wastewater Treatment
MITA WT offers advanced engineered aeration solutions that represent the cutting edge in optimizing the biological treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater. EDI diffusers (including the FlexAir® Pro, FlexAir® Basic, and CoarsAir™ lines) are the critical components that introduce the air necessary for microorganisms to decompose contaminants and pollutants. Thanks to these technologies, organic matter can be effectively degraded and removed.
Flexible and durable components The offering includes a wide range of diffusers (discs, tubes, panels) and membranes (such as EPDM, Silicone, Polyurethane, and Matrix™) to regulate bubble size, durability, and compatibility. Performance is guaranteed according to specific treatment needs.
Optimized biological process management Aeration introduces the air necessary for microorganisms to decompose contaminants. The EDI portfolio includes fine bubble diffusers (FlexAir® Pro) for efficient oxygen transfer, and coarse bubble diffusers (CoarsAir™) for aggressive mixing where aeration is insufficient.
Reduced Life Cycle Cost (LCC) Aeration configurations are designed for the lowest possible life cycle cost (LCC), in line with the mission of EDI and MITA WT to help customers manage environmental impact at the lowest possible cost.
Comprehensive “Aeration for Life™” support MITA WT and EDI are long-term partners in aeration, providing continuous support to engineers, contractors, and operators throughout the life of the aeration project.
Reliable, proven technology EDI, MITA WT’s diffuser supplier, is recognized for excellence and provides aeration solutions installed in over 8,000 systems across more than 100 countries since 1975.
Description of EDI Air Diffusers
Air diffusers are essential components in activated sludge biological treatment, used in municipal and industrial wastewater plants to oxygenate microorganisms and keep them suspended.
With aeration experience dating back to 1975, EDI offers three main categories of diffusers:
- Fine Bubble Diffusers (FlexAir® Pro and FlexAir® Basic): the ideal solution when treatment efficiency is limited by oxygen deficiency. Fine bubbles (less than 2 mm) ensure a large air-water contact surface and slow rise, promoting efficient oxygen transfer at all water levels. FlexAir® Pro provides maximum flexibility in multiple forms (discs, tubes, panels, Streamline®).
- Coarse Bubble Diffusers (CoarsAir™): required when the limitation is insufficient mixing. CoarsAir™ diffusers produce larger bubbles (over 4 mm in diameter) that, as they rise, provide aggressive mixing. This technology is valued for its robust design, low maintenance, and clog resistance, making it ideal for challenging applications or the mixing of high solid concentrations.
EDI’s approach, combined with MITA WT’s support and the broader vision of the Axius Water group, ensures that each aeration system is optimized for the customer’s specific needs, offering solutions that reduce operating costs and maximize efficiency.

Environmental Dynamics International (EDI) and MITA Water Technologies (MITA WT) are both part of Axius Water, an international group focused on nutrient removal in both municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.
Founded by KKR and XPV Water Partners, Axius Water is dedicated to improving water quality and addressing the global nutrient crisis.
MITA Water Technologies, active since 1971, contributes to Axius Water with high-efficiency systems for biological treatment and tertiary filtration.
EDI, a company that has revolutionized fine bubble aeration technologies since 1975, was acquired and integrated into the Axius Water platform in June 2020—gaining synergistic capabilities and a broader range of solutions.
Together, within Axius Water, both companies offer a diversified portfolio of technologies for wastewater treatment and reuse in both municipal and industrial applications.
Main Components of All EDI Diffusers
- entral Diffuser Structure: The physical units that distribute air, available in various forms (discs, tubes, panels, etc.) to meet specific needs.
- Membranes or Diaphragms: Made of materials such as EPDM, Silicone, Polyurethane, or Matrix™, designed to regulate bubble size and durability according to treatment requirements.
- System Configurations: Aeration platforms are mounting structures (such as fixed grids or retrievable ModuleAir™ configurations) designed for optimal efficiency and to host the diffusers.
