Wastewater Treatment for Industrial Engineering Firms

Supporting engineers with innovative technologies that comply with regulation

How to relieve technical studies from a part of private sewage treatment plant design? First, with efficient and cost-effective technologies throughout the life cycle. Also, with product training and BIM models-an increasingly sought-after resource for integrating products into the design of a larger plant.

The treatment and reuse of industrial water: the challenge of contractors

We are talking about an area that is expanding, thanks in part to an increased awareness among companies with respect to the reuse of a valuable resource: an opportunity that goes beyond simply disposing of it in accordance with regulations. Industrial wastewater treatment is getting a big boost not only from European and national legislation, but also because of companies’ desire to save resources by optimizing processes.

Engineering firms supporting companies must take these elements into account, but not only. Knowing the regulations and selecting ad hoc treatment technologies (according to established parameters) goes hand in hand with typically industrial requirements.

  • First of all, industries require the selection of systems for wastewater treatment that consume little: low water and energy use for operations.
  • In addition, we know that the often limited space available in operational and production areas is a critical issue: especially in national contexts where the production fabric consists of small or medium-sized companies.
  • Thus, we can see how “anxiety” about not incurring fines for poor water management is only one factor in the selection of treatment technologies.

Stringent environmental criteria, reduced consumption, confined space: how to put these different demands together? While staying up-to-date with the latest available technologies.

An opportunity for industrial water purification technicians

We are convinced of this: there are some “excellent” water treatment technologies that allow for efficient disposal or reuse of water and, at the same time, contain installation space, resources used and costs over the entire product life cycle (including installation, operation and maintenance).

One of the best examples is pile cloth filters: equipment, now well known to operators of large civil sewage treatment plants, that is becoming increasingly popular in industries as well because of its very high filtration performance. Very few ancillary works required for installation, simple management during the whole life cycle, energy use limited to one operation phase (i.e. backwashing of the cloths): these are the pluses that are also convincing industries and the engineering firms supporting them; which are also increasingly taking into consideration vertical-axis cloth filters: a version with even smaller footprint thanks to their peculiar spatial conformation.

In addition, MITA Water Technologies has long invested in BIM modeling: a resource that engineers know and appreciate for integrating different solutions into the design of a single wastewater treatment plant.

Last but not least. Each industry has ad hoc water treatment needs, as a result of process peculiarities and the different load of pollutants released in process water: BOD/COD, suspended solids, phosphorus, oils and fats. Initial testing through pilot units is therefore a must, prior to selection of the appropriate technology. Even at this stage, MITA Water Technologies is available with its fleet of filtration and biological treatment pilot units with the willingness to train the staff of studios and client companies on the technologies provided.
